Which flights can go ahead… and which cannot?
Rising fuel prices are putting our flights under pressure.
The price of fuel is rising rapidly. As a result, life-saving MAF flights are coming under pressure.
We can still fly now. But it is becoming increasingly difficult to sustain. Fuel costs have risen sharply. This is visible in the news worldwide. The price of aviation fuel (kerosene) is rising faster than gasoline. In a short time, it has increased by more than 50%.
For us, this means that flights will come under pressure.
For people who depend on these flights, there is no alternative. If our plane cannot fly, help will not come.
Help Make Flights Possible
Anyone who has refuelled in South Africa recently has noticed it immediately: fuel prices have risen enormously. For most people, that means a higher bill at the pump, higher grocery bills, and higher taxes.
But what if refuelling is not a choice?
For our work, fuel is not an expense that can be postponed or reduced. It determines whether or not a life-saving flight can take place.
Due to the closure of the Strait of Hormuz in connection with the war, fuel prices have risen sharply.
Kerosene prices rose even faster than vehicle fuel, because kerosene for global use is refined more frequently than average in facilities in Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, and the Emirates; countries that depend on the Strait of Hormuz for transit.
In East Africa, fuel prices rose by more than 50% in just a few days.
In Indonesia, the country where we operate most of our flights, the price rose by as much as 67%.
Fuel: not an option, but a necessity.
Every day, our pilots are ready to reach people who cannot get help in any other way. Think of remote villages without roads, where an airplane is the only link to medical care.
A pilot is ready.
A doctor is waiting.
Everything is arranged.
But without fuel, the plane cannot take off.
And if the plane cannot fly, help will not come.
Global price increase directly impacts MAF’s work.
In recent months, aviation fuel prices have risen sharply worldwide. Due to geopolitical tensions, including the conflict in the Middle East, costs have increased significantly over a short period.
We always account for rising fuel costs in our budget. But these unexpected and substantial increases go far beyond that.
Those are not abstract figures. Those are flights that are coming under pressure.
Choices you don’t want to make.
As costs continue to rise, a difficult moment draws closer: the moment when choices must be made. Which flight can proceed and which cannot?
For the people who depend on MAF, there is no alternative.
A child with malaria who urgently needs medical help.
A patient who can only reach a hospital by plane.
An aid worker who needs to go to a remote area.
These are not flights you postpone until tomorrow.
Working together to ensure flights can keep going.
We can still fly now. But due to rising fuel costs, it is becoming increasingly difficult to sustain this. That is why MAF is appealing to its donors to help right now, so that these flights can continue.
So that fuel does not become a reason not to operate a flight.
Prayer and involvement.
In addition to financial support, we also ask for prayer. That sufficient funds remain available to fly, and that no choices need to be made about which flights will or will not go ahead.

In Chad, JETA1 aviation fuel increased by 8% to US$1.13 per litre
In Guinea, JETA1 aviation fuel increased by 51% to US$2.84 per litre
In Kenya, JETA1 aviation fuel increased by 88% to US$1.79 per litre
In Liberia, JETA1 aviation fuel increased by 61% to US$2.00 per litre
In Madagascar, JETA1 aviation fuel increased by 74% to US$2.53 per litre
In South Sudan, JETA1 aviation fuel increased by 65% to US$1.90 per litre
In Tanzania, JETA1 aviation fuel increased by 75% to US$1.67 per litre
In Uganda, AVGAS aviation fuel increased by 58% to US$2.65 per litre
In response to the astronomical fuel hike, Madagascar called a two-week state of emergency. The African island relies on oil from Oman, which is south of the Strait of Hormuz.
ASIA PACIFIC
In Arnhem Land, JETA1 aviation fuel increased by 51% to US$2.79 per litre
In Papua New Guinea, JETA1 aviation fuel increased by 64% to US$2.00 per litre
In Timor-Leste, AVGAS aviation fuel increased by 17% to US$2.75 per litre
